Going green! June is a mass of green with rapid growth in the trees and fruit. This is a critical month for apple trees, not just in the growth of the tiny apples but also in the tree deciding whether to keep them and setting down the bud for the following year. “June drop” (which can happen in July) refers to the tree naturally throwing off apples it cannot healthily carry. We have to help the tree to find the right balance to ensure we also have a crop the following year as the tree will always prioritise having apples over being healthy.
We have featured a new orchard today as these are our young trees needing water. Our drip irrigation delivers one cup of water every 60cm directly to where the young roots are.
Apple trees need water to grow well. Water is the way the tree absorbs essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Watering helps the tree hold the crop and keep its leaves healthy. Watering also helps the tree stay strong and fight off disease . Young apple trees need plenty of water to grow and establish a healthy root system.
And you can stay healthy too by drinking plenty of water and eating an apple a day!
