It’s all about the Bees and Blossom!

We’ve hosted hundreds of people this month to come and see our apple blossom. We are comfortably in petal fall now. Our walks have been so popular we are hoping to do a set of summer and harvest walks to show how the trees develop their leafy food factories to grow our apples. Ideally we would have liked flowering to have been a bit quicker as it is normally a sign of a good set but the one advantage of the colder winds has been to see the flowers and bees for longer.

The farm is a mass of tiny pollinated fruitlets (where the flower has been pollinated). White pinky petals are floating in the air or sprinkled on the orchard floor while the trees burst into new young leaf with the signature light green. It’s a party for our bees. We have our own solitary and bumble bees that live all year round with us (mostly in the ground) and enjoy the wildflowers in our orchard rows and headlands. These are great workers as they are the first out in the morning and will fly and do their magic in low temperatures. In blossom time we try to maximise the pollination potential by getting extra help from our worker bees in partnership with our local Bee Keeper, Roy Taylor.  His hives are full of thousands of brilliant worker bees (it’s the girls that do the work…but they only come out when it is above 14 degrees!). We need the worker bees to help move the pollen from one variety to another. Egremont Russet is an amazing pollinator as it comes out early and stays out longest, while our Zari needs to be awash with 5 types of pollen to be successful. We could get pollination without the bees through the wind, our existing bees and, in fact, pretty much all flying insects, but we don’t like to leave such an important week to chance!
