They are really becoming an everyday wild feature on the farm. They can do damage to our trees by literally stripping branches of everything, leaves and all, leaving torn damaged bark that is then prone to infection. We try to keep them away from the young trees in particular but it is impossible not to take a step back in awe of such majestic prancing and darting around. They can literally be hiding right next to you and then suddenly dart off and travel for miles. The most consistent time is early evening and they can travel many miles in one day.
Most of the deer on the farm are Roe and Fallow. If you want to learn more about types of deer, how to identify them, their habits, their breeding and how they have really become a regular wild feature in Kent and the UK, I cannot recommend highly enough top (local) Chef Jose L. Souto’s fabulous book “Venison: The Game Larder”. Jose’s knowledge is accompanied by Steve Lee’s amazing photography and, even if you don’t fancy eating them, his knowledge is second to none.
