Farewell February, hello March!
March means Mother’s Day and a spring in our step after such healthy living during the winter.
Our valentines offer is due to end but Mum’s the word for March (see below)
As we say goodbye to February, we need to take stock of all the good healthy intentions we had at the beginning of the year. This week we are going to look back at the health benefits we have featured from the humble apple with a heavy dose of single estate provenance.
Ultimately it does matter where our food comes from and the more we know about it, the more we enjoy it. Since January, we have covered why an apple a day really can keep the doctor away.
Let’s recap with the “frees”: Apples are fat free, gluten free, sodium free, salt free and they even attack those nasty free radicals. Why does this matter? Fat free helps tackle obesity and while apples are sweet, the sugars are only those naturally occurring. Apples are plant based, of course, and do not contain gluten, while being sodium and salt free they also contribute to your heart health and blood pressure.
But rather than “free from” – what is it that apples (and indeed apple juice and even cider in many cases) actually have inside them that makes them so good for us? Naturally filled with polyphenols / antioxidants / flavonoids / – quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid, these phytochemicals are naturally produced by the tree when the apple is growing and they help fight heart disease, reduce cholesterol and even break down the dangerous cancer causing free radicals. Improved circulation not only helps the body but it also helps the mind and improves brain function. Microbiota and fibre help improve our gut health and our bodily bowel functions too! And then you have the nutrients – mostly water with sweet natural carbohydrates (the natural sugars), vitamins C, A and B6, iron and calcium. All from the humble apple!
